GLENCORE
Glencore is one of the world’s largest mining companies (ninth in the world). The company has been widely criticized for tax avoidance, poor health and safety conditions in many of their mines, extreme environmental pollution and child labour.
EPH
EPH buys up coal and gas power stations that other electricity companies sell off for environmental and climate reasons. Instead of closing down these power stations, in compliance with the Paris Agreement, EPH keeps them open longer. The company wants to keep coal-fired power stations open until 2038(!). In various places, EPH is also converting coal-fired power stations into wood-fired biomass power stations, which emit even more CO2 per unit of energy generated than coal-fired power stations.
ArcelorMittal
ArcelorMittal is the second largest steel company in the world. It heavily depends on coal for its steel production (think of Tata Steel Nederland, but ten times bigger and international). ING has financed Arcelor for 1.3 billion US dollars since 2016. ArcelorMittal was responsible for the deaths of forty-five miners in Kazakhstan, due to a fire in the coal mine where safety was severely lacking.
Cirebon coal-fired power stations
ING, leading an international consortium of banks, financed Cirebon 2, a large coal-fired power station in West Java, despite previous commitments not to finance any new coal-fired power stations. Local landowners were intimidated and pressured into selling their land. People in the villages near the power plant have had to give up their familiar activities (fishing, salt extraction and agriculture) due to pollution and excessive water use by the Cirebon power plants. ING also advises on a potential expansion of 1000 Megawatts.
